Have you ever gone to pay a bill, tapped your card and noticed the total was a little higher than you expected? Those extra charges are known as payment surcharges, and while they might seem small at the time, they can quickly add up across your monthly bills.

In case you have not heard, the way Australians pay is changing. Following a review by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), surcharges on Visa and Mastercard payments are being phased out as part of broader reforms to make card payments simpler and more transparent. The changes will take effect across Australia from 1 October 2026, however, at More, we're introducing this change even sooner.

From 3 August 2026, More customers will no longer pay a surcharge when paying their bill with a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card.

The only exception is:

  • AMEX: 2% surcharge

These fees will remain.

What does this mean for More customers?

If you already pay your More bill using a Visa or Mastercard, you don't need to do anything. From 3 August 2026, the surcharge will simply disappear from your bill. It's one less thing to think about and one less surprise when it's time to pay.

Looking beyond the advertised price

Whether you're comparing mobile plans, internet providers or any other household service, it's always worth looking beyond the advertised monthly price. Extra fees, including payment surcharges, can change what you actually end up paying each month.

As payment surcharges begin disappearing across Australia, comparing providers should become simpler and more transparent, making it easier to understand exactly what you're paying for.
